In the next step, you want to collect the data that was provided at the time the internet domain was registered. (Note that this information need not be correct and can also be the offender's data.)
For the subsequent name resolution to work, the information must be correct for at least one, better several responsible name servers.
For data protection and organisational reasons, not each DNR lets you view all roles in an automated request process.
For instance, "RESTENA" (responsible for ".lu") allows you to request your information to be anonymised.
The "VeriSign Global Registry Services" (responsible for the very widely used ".net" and ".com" TLDs, and others)
delegates the responsibility for storing specific information to the
ISP
.
If the internet domain is a ".net" or ".com" domain, an automated enquiry (e.g. using the
"WHOIS"
application in a
LINUX/BSD/Unix
shell
or the
eToolz
application on a Microsoft Windows desktop) will yield information about the ISP, the name server(s) and all roles
(holder,
Admin-C,
Tech-C
and
Zone-C).
The web WHOIS will only refer you to the ISP responsible (including the name server).
You need to submit a second enquiry against the ISP's WHOIS service to also obtain information about the roles:
